19 мая 1919 г. Мустафа Кемаль прибыл в Керасунд, чтобы встретиться с губер-натором города Топал Османом. В ходе этой встречи Кемаль призвал Топал Осма¬на “очистить Турцию от греков”, а затем через местные турецкие газеты обратился с тем же призывом к всему турецкому народу. Это стало сигналом к истреблению греков Понта. Поскольку с партизанами турецкая армия справиться не могла, вся ярость турок обрушилась на мирное население.

The Greek Genocide was the systematic extermination of the Greek subjects of the Ottoman Empire before, during and after World War I (1914-1923).
It was instigated by successive governments of the Ottoman Empire, including the Committee of Union and Progress (C.U.P), and the Nationalist Kemalists of Mustafa Kemala Atatürk. It included massacres, forced deportations and death marches, summary expulsions, boycotts, forced conversion to Islam, conscription into labour battalions, arbitrary executions, and destruction of Christian Orthodox cultural, historical and religious monuments. According to various sources, between 1 and 1.5 million Ottoman Greeks perished during this period.
